Fair Shot for All’s 2019 Legislative Agenda Update
We’re more than halfway through the legislative session and while we’ve accomplished a lot, there’s still more work to be done. We want to fill you in on the progress we’ve made together and let you know about some key ways you can continue to help:
Investing in Our Future
From all corners of the state, the message is loud and clear: It’s time to invest in our students! Earlier this month, hundreds of Oregonians made their way to the Capitol to urge lawmakers to make our tax system fairer and require corporations to do their part to fund our schools. Here’s how you can help: Contact the Joint Committee on Student Success and urge them to support the Student Success Act (HB 3427), and then RSVP for important rallies coming up: May 8th for Students and May 20th rally at the Capitol for United for a Better Oregon.
Paid Family and Medical Leave
Every Oregonian should be able to give or get the care they need without risking their ability to pay the bills. We’re fighting to pass a universal paid family and medical leave insurance program this session. It’s important for lawmakers to hear from you. Send them a message today letting them know that ALL Oregonians deserve access to paid family and medical leave!
Stable Homes for Families: Passed!
We scored a huge victory early in session with the passage of one of our legislative priorities: Stable Homes for Families. SB 608 provides basic protection against no-cause evictions and extreme rent increases. The bill moved quickly through the Senate and House chambers, and was signed into law by Governor Brown on February 28, 2019. Read more about the bill and how it will help advance gender, racial, and economic justice.
Equal Access to Justice
Every Oregonian, regardless of the color of their skin or where they come from, deserves a right to a fair trial. HB 3145 is a critical step toward addressing the systemic deficiencies in our current public defense system. After passing out of the House Committee on Judiciary (by a 10 to 1 vote!), our lawmakers still need to hear from you: Contact them today, and ask them to support HB3145, to ensure equal access to justice for ALL Oregonians.
Driver’s Licenses for All
Last week, hundreds of Oregonians made their way to the State Capitol to urge lawmakers to pass the Equal Access to Roads Act (HB2015). Allowing ALL Oregonians the opportunity to take a driving test and apply for a license makes our roads and communities safer, and we’re proud to see incredible support pouring in from across the state. Support the campaign by signing up for May Day March and Rally, and then contact your lawmakers and urge them to support HB 2015.
There will be a lot happening behind the scenes in the next few weeks. Stay tuned by following us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to see the latest ways you can help. We know that when we work together, we’re unstoppable.
